AI / Machine Learning Interns

Job Title: AI / Machine Learning Intern

Location: Remote or Hybrid

Duration: 2 months

Positions: Two

Compensation: $1,000 stipend per selected intern

About the Project:
STEMUplift Foundation is creating a summer internship opportunity for students interested in applying computer science, artificial intelligence, and data science to real-world social impact challenges. This project will focus on using publicly available datasets to research, analyze, and build an early-stage AI prototype related to PTSD prediction and mental health risk patterns among veterans and service members.

The goal is to develop a responsible, research-basedd product foundation that may later support veteran wellness, outreach, and data collection efforts. This project is for educational, research, and prototype development purposes only and is not intended to provide medical diagnosis, treatment, or clinical advice.

Role Overview:
We are looking for motivated and detail-oriented AI / Machine Learning Interns to help design, build, and document a prototype platform that uses machine learning models and publicly available data to better understand PTSD-related risk factors. Interns will work on dataset research, data preprocessing, model training, web application development, documentation, and final presentation materials.

This is a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in AI, healthcare-related data analysis, ethical technology development, and nonprofit STEM innovation.

Responsibilities:

Dataset Research and Preparation:

  1. Identify and review publicly available datasets related to PTSD, mental health, trauma, military service, or related behavioral health indicators.

  2. Clean, preprocess, and organize datasets for model training and analysis.

  3. Document dataset sources, limitations, features, and ethical considerations.

AI and Machine Learning Development:

  • Develop and train machine learning models to identify PTSD-related patterns or risk factors.

  • Evaluate model performance using appropriate metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and explainability methods.

  • Compare multiple approaches such as logistic regression, random forest, gradient boosting, or neural network models where appropriate.

Product and Website Development:

  • Support the development of a prototype website or application to demonstrate the model and project concept.

  • Create user-friendly visualizations, dashboards, or reporting tools to explain model outputs.

  • Work with the team to ensure the prototype is simple, clear, and responsible in how it presents health-related information.

Technical Documentation:

  • Document system architecture, data flow, model design, training process, and deployment instructions.

  • Create clear instructions for how future students or developers can reproduce the work.

  • Prepare a final technical report and project summary.

Ethical AI and Privacy Awareness:

  • Apply responsible AI principles when working with health-related or sensitive datasets.

  • Clearly communicate that the prototype is not a medical diagnostic tool.

  • Identify privacy, bias, fairness, and data limitation risks.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Participate in regular project check-ins with STEMUplift Foundation mentors.

  • Share progress, challenges, and recommendations with the project team.

  • Prepare a final presentation or demo at the end of the internship.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.

  • Junior or senior undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Skills:

  • Strong programming skills, preferably in Python.

  • Basic understanding of machine learning, data analysis, or artificial intelligence.

  • Familiarity with libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar tools.

  • Basic web development experience is helpful.

  • Strong problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid environment.

Experience:

  • Previous coursework or projects in machine learning, data science, software development, or AI is preferred.

  • Experience with GitHub, Jupyter Notebook, Google Colab, or cloud-based development tools is a plus.

  • Interest in healthcare technology, veteran support, mental health research, or social impact projects is highly desirable.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Matplotlib, Plotly, Tableau, or Power BI.

  • Familiarity with Flask, FastAPI, React, Streamlit, or similar web application frameworks.

  • Knowledge of Agile development, Jira, Trello, or project management workflows.

  • Understanding of ethical AI, data privacy, model bias, or human-centered design.

  • Experience working with public datasets or research-based projects.

What You Will Gain:

  • Hands-on experience building an AI and machine learning prototype from concept to demonstration.

  • Practical experience with dataset research, model training, evaluation, and documentation.

  • Mentorship from STEM and technology professionals.

  • Experience working on a meaningful social impact project connected to veteran wellness and mental health research.

  • The opportunity to strengthen your resume, portfolio, GitHub, and technical presentation skills.

  • A flexible work environment with opportunities for creativity, learning, and professional growth.

How to Apply

  • Please submit the following to stemuplift@gmail.com:

    • Your resume.

    • A brief cover letter explaining your interest in this internship.

    • A link to your portfolio or relevant projects, such as GitHub, personal website, class project, or research work.

    • We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in our workplace.
